Why Academic Coaching?
High school presents more challenges than ever before, and the process of college admissions has never been more fickle. Quality academic success may simply not be enough for many students to be accepted into the university of their choice. In fact, 90% of students with 4.0 GPAs are denied from the top-25 universities, and college counselors are frequently more interested in recommending universities for the benefit of their institution or have little genuine understanding of the best fit for a student. For parents and students, the process can be absolutely overwhelming. But there are other paths towards achieving desired outcomes.
After working in education for nearly two decades, there are specific patterns among the most successful young students.
First, they inspect possible careers or interests at an early age, often as early as 8th or 9th grade. For most students, exploring possible avenues to open, verify, and, perhaps most importantly, close possible career doors of investigation remains vital before junior year. Sadly, colleges are rarely interested in students exploring their interests once they are enrolled; these institutions prefer applicants who have clear maps of their future.
Second, most successful students gravitate towards hobbies, sports, or arts in which they have interest, frequently cultivating these pursuits in their spare time. In fact, many of these students find academic routes and extracurricular options that will reinforce their interests.
Third, most successful students do more than the minimum, as they read creative books, watch thoughtful movies, and exercise their minds regularly outside of homework.
However, not every student quickly discovers their own path, has a linear path towards possible careers, or even knows which book, film, or news story to analyze on their own. Some students simply have no clue where to start or struggle deeply with confidence about their abilities, and even those who check all three boxes above can benefit from someone to inspire and push them.
I serve as the catalyst to achieve desired outcomes on this journey for your child.

About
James, a Georgia native, was raised primarily by his grandparents due to his parents' commitments, which granted him independence in pursuing his interests. Excelling at the University of Georgia, he chose English over more conventional majors, aiming to improve his critical thinking skills. After briefly considering law and business, he worked as a tennis pro before pursuing graduate studies in English literature at UGA and later at the University of South Carolina. There, he completed his doctorate, met his future wife, and honed his teaching skills. Joining Providence Day School, he made significant contributions across various departments and pioneered initiatives like the Social Entrepreneurship Coordinator role, organizing impactful events. Now seeking to further connect with students individually, he aims to maximize his impact in one-on-one sessions.
